Who do we think we are?

Posted by Hiphopopotamus on February 27th, 2009 under Uncategorized

Pardon my quick look at the football program/athletic department, but some of these single game prices just blow me away.

All three non-conference games are $50.  Fair enough.

Iowa State is $60.  Pushing your luck.

Nebraska and Oklahoma are $90.  Really?  So for someone to get a decent seat up behind the band, or at the top in the corner, they are going to have to dole out $90?  And I wonder why we don’t sell some of these out.

Rarely do I have to worry about single game prices as we simply make our Williams Fund donation (tiered), pay our flat season ticket rate  ($300 equalling $50/game) and move on.  But even in doing so, the single game price is still printed on the ticket and over the last couple years I found myself stunned by what we were charging.  So you can imagine my surprise when I learned we’d be charging $90/ticket for both the Nebraska and Oklahoma games.   Hell, Missouri is still TBD – could that actually hit triple figures for those of us in the lower level?

I’m not quite yet at old balls status – despite occasionaly often snuggling into bed at ten o’clock with The Economist – so I haven’t had to deal with ticket prices for very long.  So, I have very little perspective on this.  How absurd does $90 for a game at Memorial stadium sound to you?  What about some of our non-KU readers … What is Texas charging at newly enlarged DKR (and is it one price or different for levels)?  What about in that shithole in Columbia?  Anywhere, really. I’d just love to compare.

This is my second semi-pointless rant in as many days, but let’s just say that we better start competing for conference titles if we’re going to charge these kind of prices.  Otherwise, the idea of selling out every game and/or stadium expansion should be immediately curbed.

  1. It is a bit of a money grab, but I don’t think the money grab is directed at KU fans. Instead, I think KUAC wants KU fans to think, “Well, I might as well buy season tickets for that price.” Not counting the WEF donation the season tickets look like a better option.

  2. Couldn’t it also be a way to get more money out of the visiting fans? We know NU and OU travels well so it’s just a way to gouge them.

  3. I think you’re both right. I still don’t think it’s defensible. Especially because we should be more concerned with bringing fans in than money at this point. If we’re able to sustain the success, there will be plenty of opportunity to rake in the money (see: basketball program).

Example #1 would be last year’s Tech game. A beautiful October day – on Homecoming no less -and we didn’t sell out with an undefeated top 10 opponent. Not to mention that this was right after we had played OU very well in Norman the week prior and were actually favored, so fan expectations and morale were still extremely high. I don’t remember what we charged that day, but if it was something like $75, I have to think that contributed to us not selling out. To me, that’s a problem.

  4. Not saying it is defensible, but another thing to look at is one less home game this go around compared to recent years. As others said, NU and OU are pretty stellar home-con games that will probably sell out.

Not defending in the least, I swear. Hi Lew!

  5. Peter…….what’s happening?
Oh, and remember: next Friday… is Hawaiian shirt day. So, you know, if you want to, go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt and jeans.

  6. Actually, the non-cons are the ones that bother me. I dropped from four to two tickets for 2009, because I pretty much had to give those non-con tickets away. I’ll pay any amount to keep NU fans out (no disrespect, just want a blue stadium). Which brings up a thought. I wonder how many Nebraska fans went ahead and bought season tickets.

I think the Tech game was $55 (That’s what my CU stub says, regrettably I lost the TTU one). Also, the attendance was 50,125, so it’s not like we’re miles away. It looked bad, because most people left in the second q.

Anyway, it’s just the effect of having a 50k stadium. They’re going to maximize that revenue. Now parking on the other hand … don’t get me started.

  7. Dammit, I got this email in my inbox and didn’t even open it (bought kU/Mizzou Border War tix through kU a couple of times. Easier than finding Mizzou ones or getting scalped).

I would have enjoyed a great laugh at the email. Instead, I do it here. Oh well.

Not that anyone should care, but I agree with Peter as far as the game choices and shutting out Nubs and Okie fans from going to Larryville, but what happens when it’s the rest of the B12 South and the Nubs still suck? Texas travels fairly well, but Baylor, ATM, TT, and Okie State @ $90 a pop? I’m hoping the rest of the B12 doesn’t follow the example. It’s the one GREAT thing about the B12 that elite conferences can’t say: the distance between the schools is nothing. If I was in KC, outside of Colorado, I could wake up and drive to any game in the B12 North. I could probably hit Norman or Stillwater if I wanted to from KC. Either way, it makes the B12 a better conference because of the close distance between schools.

  8. After reading this again on the Missourah blog, I think maybe it should be clarified that those are reserved prices. If the Family Zone tickets aren’t sold out, they should be available at a much lower price, right?

  9. These are reserved prices, so I would anticipate family zone spots would be much cheaper if they were not sold. But I don’t know that for sure, or what the price of them would be.

  10. Good morning. I have just found your website great. Help me! Looking for sites on: Instrument’s businesses told american express as a far separate attrition..
