Midwest Region

We’re the one seed of one seeds. At least in title. You can see my initial thoughts here, and they have been accompanied by some good comments below. Having now taken some time to digest – and also learn that the committee takes georgraphy into account prior to their own S-curve – I’ve calmed and put some things in perspective.

1st Round: Lehigh - Probably the toughest 16 seed out there – and we Kansas fans obviously don’t like getting a Patriot League team in Oklahoma City – but they’re still a 16 and we’re still a 1. If we can’t handle them, we weren’t going to do much damage anyway.

2nd Round: UNLV/UNI - Many are talking about this as a dangerous game. Personally, I’m more worried about Lehigh. I’ve actually watched both of these teams play a couple times this year, and was never impressed. I do like the omen of possibly getting UNLV as our second round game…that went well last time.

Sweet 16: Michigan State/Maryland – Both of these teams are good quality, top 20 type teams. Basically, they’re A&M. Each of them can match us on the perimeter, but neither has any inside presence to speak of, and we should own the paint.

Elite 8: Ohio State/Georgetown – And this is why everyone calls it the toughest region. And deservedly so, as both have been playing great. Like almost all teams, we have no answer for Monroe or Turner. But those stars aside, these teams don’t create huge problems for us. Of the two, I’d rather face Georgetown – because our biggest weakness is probably defending the three – but both have extremely short benches, neither can take us out of what we do offensively, and we should dominate the glass against both. Long story short, this will be a really tough, hardfought game…but that’s what the Elite 8 is supposed to be.

And that’s our road to Indy. I’m not sure what all the fuss is about.

I was pretty pissed about the seeding as well…but have cooled my jets since then. I really think KU is focused and determined right now. The way KU has played recently the other teams in our bracket have got to be shitting their collective pants right now. Like hiphop said, we’re still the best…now it’s time to prove it.

  2. I really think Luke Winn said it best:

“• My issue with the Group of Death Midwest Region isn’t so much that Kansas got screwed despite being the No. 1 overall seed. It’s not the hugest deal, for the Jayhawks, that they were paired with one of the two best two-seeds (Ohio State), the best three-seed (Georgetown) and the strongest four-five combination (Maryland-Michigan State). They can beat those teams. They will beat those teams. The problem is that by overloading Kansas’ region, the NCAA Selection Committee severely diluted the West and South, making for one of the most unbalanced brackets ever.

    • No one wants to be the guy who puts four No. 1s in his Final Four. So I went hunting for a non-No. 1 that I liked out of the West or South … and started wishing West Virginia, Ohio State, Georgetown or Michigan State were in the West or South.”

KU should still be fine. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that they horribly fucked up the from spots 3-10 on their supposed S-curve.

  3. Worst thing the committee ever did was mention the S-curve. It’s a crock and is too tough to do. A few years ago the selection committee opted to put more value into location. By doing so they rendered this S-curve useless.

I’m fine with them wanting 1-4 seeds playing as close to home as possible. But if that’s the case, come out and just say it, and admit there is no longer an S-curve.

  4. About the S-curve. From what I understand, KU’s top-seeded bracket should include the worst 2-seed, but should also include the best 3-seed. And the best 5-seed, and the best 7-seed, etc. So when KU has the best 4-5 combo, it’s not so surprising b/c the 5-seed should have been the best, it’s just that the 4-seed seems off.

  5. [...] Jerry Tarkanian’s recruiting coordinator is serving 20 years for similar offenses. Imagine what Bill Self wants to do to NCAA Selection Committee chair Dan Guerrero for loading this deck with [...]

  6. Completely agree, Triston.

I started looking at my bracket last night and just couldn’t help but laugh at the relative ease of Duke’s region. I don’t know if they’ll breaze through it, but there just isn’t a FF team in there except them.
